Poster - 6 Kinds of Questions Students Should Learn to Ask (Socratic Questions)
Woohoo! You're on the list!
Asking questions is one of the most overlooked and underestimated learning skills. In fact, its both, a skill and a technique, and if you ask the ancient Greek philosophers, its an art as well.
Unfortunately, our culture puts too much of a premium on being right, being first, being fast. Our children soon lose their natural inclination to ask a million questions as they explore the world, just like you and I did, somewhere down the line.
But the art of questions can be brought back. Parents can help children learn how to ask better questions - and thats part of our agnecy in helping our kids be the learners, innovators and explorers we would like them to be. This infographic will give you a handy overview of the different types of questions. I don't mean to be over-technical here, so please don't get hung up on the terms and names. Just encourage all questions, respond to questions with questions, and see the magic unfold!
Remember- we don't only ask questions because we are dumb or don't understand something. The smartest people ask lots and lots of questions. It is indeed the best way to learn. Our biggest job as parents is to undo the damage schools and peers may be doing to our children by putting in a fear or apprehension of asking questions to explore, clarify or think in new directions.
